Unable to Create the BootIt NG Diskette Under Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7

This problem can occur if you do not have the necessary privileges in Windows and also if the diskette is faulty. To correct this issue:

  • Make sure that you are logged into Windows with Administrator privileges.
  • Try a different diskette. Perform a full format on it first, to ensure its integrity.

If the BootIt NG diskette creator (i.e. MakeDisk, BOOTITNG.EXE) cannot find or write to the floppy drive at all, and you are using Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7, you may be blocked from accessing the floppy drive due to security settings.

To solve this issue:

Go into the Local Security Settings or Local Security Policies applet and check status the Devices: Restrict floppy access to locally logged-on user only setting. You can find this applet in the Control Panel under Administrative Tools >> Local Security Policy. Expand Local Polices and then click on Security Options.

If this setting is enabled, you must either:

  1. Disable this security setting, reboot the computer, and then either log in as a member of the Administrators group, or use the "/runas /user:Administrator" command to run MakeDisk or BOOTITNG.EXE; or

  2. Leave the security setting enabled and log in as a member of the Administrators group the normal way (i.e. not using the "runas" command) before running MakeDisk or BOOTITNG.EXE.
