How to Image All Sectors of a FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Ext2/3, or Reiser Partition Using BootIt NG

By default, when creating an image of a FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Ext2/3, or Reiser partition using BootIt NG, only used sectors are backed up. This behavior is the result of the Data Only option being enabled by default.

Creating images with the Data Only option enabled generally saves processing time when creating/validating/restoring images, and also reduces the amount of space needed for the image file(s). However, if desired, you can instruct BootIt NG to backup all (i.e. used and unused) sectors when creating an image of a FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Ext2/3, or Reiser partition, by disabling the Data Only option.

To access the Data Only option, carry out the usual steps you would go through to create an image, with one exception:
  • If you are saving the image to a hard drive, hold down the left Shift key when clicking OK on the dialog that prompts you to select a Maximum File Size.

  • If you are saving the image to an optical drive, hold down the left Shift key when clicking OK on the dialog that prompts you to select a Write Speed.
When you hold down the left Shift key while clicking OK on the aforementioned dialogs, you will be prompted with a Data Only option. Respond No on this dialog to backup all (i.e. used and unused) sectors.
