How Do I Update BootIt NG?

This article will explain how to update an existing copy of BootIt NG. The update procedure that should be followed is virtually the same as the procedure used when you originally installed BootIt. First, you'll create the boot media, then install/upgrade the copy on the hard drive. Please refer to the appropriate sections below.

Please note that when you are preparing to update BootIt NG, TeraByte Unlimited recommends using alternate media (a different CD/DVD disc, floppy diskette, flash drive, etc.) rather than reusing the same media. This will allow you to maintain a known-working backup copy of the program and its media.

Creating the Boot Media (Windows Users):

  1. Download the latest version of BootIt NG and extract the archive. If you are using the Compressed Folders feature available under certain versions of Windows, please refer to the Special Note for Opening ZIP Files Using Compressed Folders.

  2. If there are any files you would like integrated into your new BootIt NG bootable media from the existing media, copy those files to the folder in which you extracted the BootIt NG archive. Some examples of files you may want to include are:

    • BOOTITNG.ACS  (Default BootIt NG color scheme)
    • REG.TXT  (BootIt NG registration information)
    • UDMATSR.BNG  (DOS UDMA driver)

  3. Run MakeDisk from the folder you extracted the contents of the BootIt NG archive to and follow the wizard to create the new boot media.

    • If you created an ISO image file, you must use another application to create a bootable CD/DVD from it. BurnCDCC is a freeware utility, provided by TeraByte Unlimited, for this purpose.

    • To upgrade the installed copy of BootIt on the hard drive, refer to the section below: Upgrading BootIt Next Generation on the Hard Drive.

Creating the Boot Media (All Others):

  1. Please refer to the BootIt Next Generation Installing and Getting Started Guide for details on how to create the boot media.

    • If you created a BootIt NG floppy diskette, it will now be ready for use.

    • If you created an ISO image file, you must use another application to create a bootable CD/DVD from it. BurnCDCC is a freeware utility, provided by TeraByte Unlimited, for this purpose.

Upgrading BootIt Next Generation on the Hard Drive:

  1. Boot with the new BootIt NG disc, flash drive, or diskette you created above. (Depending on your configuration, you may first have to change the boot options in the computer's BIOS.) You should arrive at the Floppy Boot Menu window.

  2. With the Upgrade BootIt NG option selected, click the OK button. The Setup window appears.

  3. Click OK on the Setup window. The next Setup window appears.

  4. The current Setup window asks if you would like the installation partition chosen for you automatically. Generally, you should click Yes, because if BootIt NG is already installed on a hard disk, the existing BootIt NG installation will be detected and chosen automatically. After clicking Yes, another Setup window appears.

  5. Click OK to begin the BootIt NG update. You will be notified when the process has completed.

  6. Click OK to acknowledge the setup completion notification and then click OK on the final Setup window to reboot.
