Error Message “An error has occurred [reading/writing] [from/to] the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?”

Problem: 

During an imaging or restore operation, respectively, you receive the following error message:

An error has occurred reading from the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?

An error has occurred writing to the hard drive; ignore the errors and continue?

Cause: 

The hard drive has one or more defective sectors.

Solution: 

To regain full function of the hard drive, try one or more of the following:

  • Run the CHKDSK.EXE utility on the problematic hard drive, using the /R parameter.  For example:

    chkdsk /r c:

    Note: Using this command may require Windows to reboot to do the actual scan. In addition, for Windows Vista and Windows 7/8.x/10 you may need to run the command from an Administrator Command Prompt.

  • Run the hard drive manufacturer's utility on the hard drive, using the most thorough settings available.  Use the following links to locate the appropriate software:

Seagate
Western Digital
HGST/WD
Toshiba

  • Run SpinRite on the hard drive, using Level 2 or higher.
